Biblical Perspective on Friendship

Warnings about faulty friendships

• Choose Wisely
  • He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. - Proverbs 13:20
  • ìListen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path. Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons [this can also refer to those with loose morals] become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.î - Proverbs 23:19-21
• Be Cautious
  • A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. - Proverbs 12:26
  • ìDo not make friends with a hot-tempered man, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn his ways and get yourself ensnared. - Proverbs 22:24-25
  • ìDo not be misled: ëBad company corrupts good character.'î - 1 Corinthians 15:33

What is a friend?

• True Friendships are Loving - A friend loves at all times... - Proverbs 17:17
• True Friendships are Loyal - Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father... - Proverbs 27:10
• True Friendships are Forgiving - He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. - Proverbs 17:9
• True Friendships are Confidential - A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. - Proverbs 11:13
• True Friendships are Admonishing - As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. - Proverbs 27:17

Conclusion

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. - Proverbs 18:24

• I want to encourage all of us to develop some of these types of friendships.
• The beginning is to become that kind of person who would make a great friend.
• But then know that we all have the offer of a friend like that...his name is Jesus.
