Put Your House in Order

Isaiah 38

June 11, 2006
Speaker: Randal Myers

Put your house in order & keep it that way!

"Put your house in order, because you are going to die..." - Isaiah 38:1

  • This is an important message not only to Hezekiah, but to each of us today as well

Four Important Truths in Life

One - Everything has an expiration date.

  • Whether you pay attention or not, everything (and I mean everything) has an expiration date - whether it's stamped or not.
  • There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die... - Ecclesaties 3:1-2

Two - No one knows their expiration date

  • Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth. - Proverbs 27:1
  • Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. - James 4:14
  • We have many promises from God but none of us is promised another day to live.

Three - Only a fool will ignore these two truths.

  • And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.' "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." ' "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?' - Luke 12:16-20
  • It's easy to grow complacent.
  • Jesus tells this parable for a reason: everything could end for us at any minute, no matter what we've made, who we are or what our intentions are.

Four - We must remain ready at all times.

  • "Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him." - Luke 12:35-40
  • We need to take time for holiness every day of our lives...so that, at any time on any day, we are ready to be with God.
