Acts 1:1-11

6 Things Jesus Left Behind (Acts 1:1-11)

An Unfinished Task

  • In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach... - Acts 1:1
  • Jesus had begun to do and to teach various things while on earth; his teaching and his actions were to carry on. His task was not finished.
  • He left the task to be finished by US. HIS task has become OUR task.
    • Matthew 28:18-20

An Unquestionable Love

  • After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. - Acts 1:3
  • Jesus endured the cross because of his unquestionable love for us! And the unquestionable love of Christ isn’t going anywhere!
    • “...Christ Jesus, who died--more than that, who was raised to life--is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: "For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.“ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”- Rom. 8:34-39

An Unmistakable Plan

  • "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." - Acts 1:8
  • Jesus promises the Holy Spirit as a source of spiritual power and then he gives the apostles the plan -- he tells them, "Be My witnesses.”

An Unshakeable Testimony

  • After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going... - Acts 1:9-10
  • Peter gives an eye witness testimony: “God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear...” (Acts 2:32)
  • Peter is testifying that they all saw Jesus after the resurrection and that they saw him taken up into heaven, right before their own eyes

An Unstoppable Force

  • "Men of Galilee," they said... - Acts 1:11
  • Verse 11 refers to the apostles as “Men of Galilee,” as though they have been put on a team, and that’s their team name.
  • Peter boldly testifies to thousands of people in the city of Jerusalem, and some 3000 souls were added to the body of Christ! Just 2 chapters later, another 5000 souls were saved, and then in Acts 5 we see “multitudes of both men and women” being added to the Lord’s body. Talk about an unstoppable force!

An Unfailing Promise

  • "This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." - Acts 1:11
  • The apostles watched Him leave, and they were promised that He would return the very same way.
  • “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” (John 14: 1-3)
