The Heart of Revival

Jonah 3:3-10

May 7, 2006
Speaker: Randal Myers

Hearts for Revival

God wants us to have hearts of revival

  • "Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth." - Hosea 6:1-3
    • Hosea was certain of revival.

Ninevah - a Story of Revival

Jonah 3:3-10

Revival Requires

  • Awareness of need
    • He proclaimed: "Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned." The Ninevites believed God. - Jonah 3:4-5
    • The Ninevites came to realize they really did have a need. Revival can only begin when we truly become aware of our condition.
  • An attitude of brokenness
    • They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.- Jonah 3:5-6
    • We have to develop this attitude to experience revival.
    • Worship itself won't do it.
      • You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. - Psalm 51:16-17
      • We tend to think that great worship will guarantee God's acceptance. David says otherwise.
  • A sense of urgency
    • "Let everyone call urgently on God...Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish." - Jonah 3:8-9
    • The need for effective prayer lives can not be overstated.
  • The pursuit of holiness
    • Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. - Jonah 3:8
    • What would we give up if we only had 40 days?
    • What would we add?

Conclusion

Maturity is shaped more by behavior than beliefs.
