Characters of the story

  • John the Baptist
    • His mission was to ready the Israelites for the coming Messiah (John 1:36).
  • Andrew, John's disciple
    • He went to find his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus (John 1:41).
  • Simon
    • He is renamed by Jesus as Cephas (Peter) (John 1:42).
      • Cephas (aramaic) or Peter (greek) translate as "rock."
      • We don't think of him as "rock-like," but Jesus knew he could form him into a Rock.

What are some of the traits Peter possessed that gave him Rock potential?

  • He was willing to listen.
    • Luke 5:1-11
    • John 6:66-69
  • He conquered his fears.
    • Luke 5:10
  • He was a man of action.

Conclusion

Formation of a Rock

  • God isn't look so much at what you are...he is looking at what you can become.
  • Peter might not have been a rock in the beginning but through the power of God, that is what he became.
