On the Road Again

March 26, 2006
Speaker: Randal Myers

Luke 15:11-20

Two Roads

  • The Road that lead away
  • The Road home

The Road Away (Luke 15:11-16)

What are the components of this road?

  • Self-centeredness
    • The younger one said to his father, 'Father, give me my share of the estate.' - Luke 15:12
  • Separation
    • "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off..." - Luke 15:13
  • Seduction
    • "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country..." - Luke 15:13
      • When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. - James 1:13-14
  • Sinfulness
    • "Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living." - Luke 15:13

The Road Home (Luke 15:17-20)

How did he find the road?

  • He came to his senses.
    • "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!'" - Luke 15:17
  • He made a decision.
    • I will set out and go back to my father... - Luke 15:18
  • He admitted his sin with remorse.
    • 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.' - Luke 15:18
  • He was filled with humility.
    • 'I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' - Luke 15:19
  • He began the trip.
    • So he got up and went to his father. - Luke 15:20

Conclusion

A final thought from Charles Hodges

  • "Tragedies in far countries can save souls. This is the only decency in hog pens: They can bring people to themselves.
  • "
