Fasting
Facts from the Bible
- There is only one required fast in scripture -- the Day of Atonement
- This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of
the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work...
- Leviticus 16:29
- Although not demanded, it was expected.
- They said to him, "John's disciples often fast and pray,
and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and
drinking." Jesus answered, "Can you make the guests of the
bridegroom fast while he is with them? But the time will come when the
bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast."
- Luke 5:33-35
- Jesus himself fasted.
- Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted
by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell
these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written:
`Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from
the mouth of God.' " - Matthew 4:1-4
- Fasting was done in the New Testament church
- In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas,
Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought
up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. While they were worshiping the
Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas
and Saul for the work to which I have called them." So after they
had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them
off. - Acts 13:1-3
- Fasting was done for various lengths of time.
- Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel, and there
they sat weeping before the LORD. They fasted that day until evening
and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD.
- Judges 20:26
- There is a right way and a wrong way to fast.
- "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do,
for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell
you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you
fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be
obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is
unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward
you. - Matthew 6:16-18
Why Fast?
- As an act of self-discipline
- Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one
gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who
competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a
crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last
forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not
fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my
slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be
disqualified for the prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
- To heighten awareness
- To express humility before God.
- Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself
with fasting. - Psalm 35:13
- When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne,
took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down
in the dust. Then he issued a proclamation in Nineveh: "By the
decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let any man or beast, herd
or flock, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let man
and beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God.
Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God
may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that
we will not perish. - Jonah 3:6-9
- To intensify prayer.
- Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and,
with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had
put their trust. - Acts 14:23
Conclusion
Matthew 6:17-18
But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it
will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father,
who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward
you.
- God promises rewarding results to those who fast with pure motives and
in the proper manner.
