Who're You Gonna CallBy: Randal Myers From Canberra, Australia comes a new mobile phone service just in time for Valentine's Day. In response to concerns voiced by singles about how to escape from a date that isn't going well, Virgin Mobile has initiated a new program wherein all one has to do is to discreetly dial three numbers and then hang up without saying a word. The cellular phone company will then call back a few minutes later with an excuse to get the desperate party out of there. They even claim to ìtalk them through what to sayî as a part of the service. The story, carried by Reuters, also indicates that a survey of young people done by Virgin Mobile, revealed that 53 percent arrange in advance to have a friend call them mid-date to check on them and see if they need an excuse to get away. The survey further indicated, not surprisingly, that women were twice as likely as men to use this tactic. While many young people are worried that they don't have enough dating opportunities, others, it seems, aren't too thrilled with the dates they do have. Maybe there's a message there. This is certainly an interesting twist to dating.
We all need rescuing from time to time...probably not from boring dates, but from all sorts of other uncomfortable or threatening situations. Our future is secure because God is our rescuer. Listen to the words of the 31st Psalm verses 1-5.
In this Psalm we can see how David depended on God as his rescuer. David was a mighty warrior and capable fighter but he also knew that his strength wasn't in his own ability but in God's availability. David always depended on God and God never let him down. Maybe this is a key to David's reputation as a ìman after God's own heart.î As I walk through life I often find myself in treacherous territory. Dangers and temptations lie in wait for me. God's words to Cain, ì... sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it " come to mind. How can I avoid the traps of Satan; how can I overcome temptation's pull? Seek the Rescuer! Give him a call...I am convinced he will respond. He has promised that with every temptation ì he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.î (1 Corinthians 10:13) And by the way, did you notice the last sentence in this Psalm? Into your hands I commit my spirit. Doesn't that sound familiar? Those are some of the last words of Jesus as he yielded his spirit on the cross. Jesus also knew on whom to call. His Father...our Father...the Great Rescuer. When you're in trouble...who're you gonna call? Home | Search | Welcome Center | Learning Center Copyright © 2003 - Highlands Church of Christ |
