God-satisfaction

By: Tony Griffies

What is ìcomplacency?î Webster's dictionary says it's ìself-satisfaction accompanied by unawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies. î Unfortunately, this word often typifies a Christian's lifeóespecially a young Christian's life.

When we find ourselves in dire straits, we often run to God for help, as well we should. But then something strange happens. With our needs supplied, we will often feel very satisfied and forget all about Godóuntil we need him again. ìI took care of you in the wilderness, in that dry and thirsty land. But when you had eaten and were satisfied, you became proud and forgot me .î (Hosea 13:5-6; NLT) This should not be!

"What is 'complacency?'"

Complacency is extremely dangerous. Remember the definition, ìÖunawareness of actual dangers or deficiencies.î Proverbs 1:32 says it this way: ìÖComplacency will destroy them.î The church at Laodicea was on the verge of destruction because of their complacency. Jesus had some stern words for themóand for us who find ourselves in the same place.

But there is hope. The Lord disciplines and rebukes those he loves, in hopes that we will return to Him. He doesn't desire to simply ìspit outî complacent people. He is willing to go through the unpleasantness of discipline because he loves us. In turn, we are to go through a shift in thinking from self-satisfaction to God-satisfaction . It is in the shift that we can again enjoy the wonderful rewards of relationship with our Father.
