"Blowed" AwayBy: Randal Myers Hurricane Isabel obtained landfall on Thursday, destroying homes, businesses and even taking the lives of twelve North Carolina residents. Flooding occurred more than twelve miles inland and the combination of storm surge and high winds did millions of dollars worth of damage to the coastland areas. Warnings were given. Evacuation demanded. The official word was, ěDestruction is eminent. You must leave to avoid danger.î But many refused the warnings. News reports just before and just after the storm struck indicated many chose not to heed the warnings. Some survived, some didn't. The Fire Chief of Kill Devil Hills, sat in his four-by-four Thursday night a safe distance from the beach as the storm was nearing landfall. He observed people continuing to make their way down to the beachfront facing the flying debris including stinging sand, spray, two-by-fours, and a host of roof and deck debris among other things. These are his words, ěI'm just watching the morons drive through this.î
When one resident, Eddie Boykin, was asked why he wouldn't leave he replied, "I got everything here. I got to protect what's mine. If it gets blowed away, I guess I get blowed away too. At least we'll have a beautiful ride." Upon hearing reports of one man who refused to leave, Paige simply remarked, ěWhy?î Why indeed? Does it ever make sense to ignore warnings and risk life and limb when there is no payoff? How are you going to ěprotect what's mineî in winds over 100 miles per hour? It defies logic. But something that defies logic in a more tragic manner is that many have refused the warnings of God. God has, more accurately that the weather bureau ever could, predicted impending destruction for those who refuse his offer of salvation through Jesus. The message is plain: there are only two roads, one that leads to safety and Life and the other that leads to danger and Destruction. Choose the correct road. Make the wrong choice and you could get ěblowed awayî...and it won't be a beautiful ride. Home | Search | Welcome Center | Learning Center Copyright © 2003 - Highlands Church of Christ |
