Blown Up for Nothing?By: Randal Myers A recent New York Times article carried the story of the First Brigade from Fort Stewart, Georgia which has just been released from duty after having spent several months in the fiercest battles of the war in Iraq. The stress and strain of dangerous combat missions over such a long period of time has made it necessary to provide special assimilation clinics as well as psychological and emotional therapy for nearly the entire corp. Among the many areas of concern is that the soldiers need to know that what they did really made a difference. Most of them faced close combat for the first time and were called on to perform many military missions that took human life and destroyed property.
Staff Sgt. Ray Robinson from Company A of the Seventh Infantry was stationed with his unit in downtown Baghdad and was operating a Humvee when he ran over a land mine. The blast blew him through the windshield and his injuries were extensive. His feet were shattered, his legs filled with shrapnel and he sustained severe burns to his face and arms and his left eardrum was broken. Upon returning to the US for recovery, he made the following statement: "We can't lose," he said. "We can't lose this. It'll all have been a waste. If we pull out now, I got blown up for nothing." No one wants their sacrifice to have been ìfor nothing.î It caused me to think of Jesus and the tremendous sacrifice he made for mankind. Could it be that in many, even the majority of individuals, it was all for nothing? The non-Christian must be taught what was done on his behalf. The Christian must heed the Bible directive to ìlive a life worthy.î The sacrifice has already been made. What we do with it determines it's worth. Make it mean something in your life.
