Feeding FrenzyBy: Randal Myers An Old Cherokee describes an experience going on inside him. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?" The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed." I have heard this illustration attributed to several sources, but no matter who originated it the message still rings true. There is, in a sense, good and evil inside all of us. It is our responsibility to be ìfeedingî the side of us that would be most like the spirit of Jesus Christ.
All parents remember those times when your child would make some comment or possibly say a word or phrase that somewhat shocked you. You would often reply, ìWhere did you hear that?î What we were doing in those instances is affirming the truth that we all are influenced by what we are exposed to. We are definitely affected by our surroundings and the things that we allow within our life experiences. We want our children to feed the right influences and starve the others. It is a difficult task, not only for children, but for all of us. But we are not helpless. God has placed before us all the tools necessary to overcome the negative and destructive influences in our lives. Our job is to become proactive in determining what flourishes inside of us. Through the Word, the avenue of prayer, positive Christian relationships, church programs and events and the myriad opportunities placed before us we can, through our choices, be confident that we are ìfeeding the right wolf.î In your life, which one gets the most nourishment? Don't forget; the stronger will win. Home | Search | Welcome Center | Learning Center Copyright © 2003 - Highlands Church of Christ |
