Can't We All Just Get Along?By: Tony Griffies Oh those famous wordsÖ.you can still hear the eloquence of Rodney King coming over the airwaves. ìCan't we all just get along?î Over the past several years, this phrase has become the mantra for so many of us. Whenever there's strife, I'm quick to join Rodney in that old familiar chorus. However, this idea was not original with Rodney King. God has been pleading with us all to ìÖjust get alongî for centuries! And He's got good reasons for it. Jesus spent hours in the garden praying to his Father. What's so significant about his prayer is that, for the most part, he was thinking about you and me! ìÖMay they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.î (John 17:23) Jesus' desire in the garden was for you and me to be united. Why was this so important? So the world will know the Son.
If we aren't on the same page, we won't be effective in reaching the lost. It's that simple. The world is so full of discrepancies, disloyalty, and deception. The church should be a safe-haven from all of this. Instead, people should see in us a unity that is unheard of anywhere else! ìMay the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.î (Rom. 15:5-6) If we aren't glorifying God with one heart and one mouth, people will notice. And they will not be very inclined to become part of something that is divided. Paul set forth the challenge for us all when he said, ìMake every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.î Home | Search | Welcome Center | Learning Center Copyright © 2003 - Highlands Church of Christ |
